UNIQUE CLINIC IN SAN FRANCISCO’S TENDERLOIN AREA SEEKS TO SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCE HOMELESSNESS – BY PREVENTING EVICTION
Will Use Conflict Intervention To Resolve Problems That Cause Homelessness
San Francisco, California, January 24, 2018 – The Lower Polk Community Benefit District, in association with the Bar Association of San Francisco, University of California Hastings College of the Law, La Voz Latina, and the San Francisco Apartment Association, is proud to announce the launch of the TLC.
“The initials TLC stand for Tenant Landlord Clinic,” says Christian Martin, Director of the Lower Polk Community Benefit District.
“Our experience shows that our most vulnerable, at risk, and marginally-housed tenants need people who care and who can help them resolve basic problems relating to their landlords,” Martin continues, “people don’t just magically ‘end up on the street,’ it’s a slow sad process – and we seek to intervene before a given person becomes homeless.”
This is the first clinic of its type in San Francisco.
Tenants have access to a broad array of eviction-prevention services including case-management, conflict intervention, referrals to other key service providers, educational classes, and mediation. Landlords have access to training on tenant rights and landlord responsibilities. All services are provided free of charge, and in multiple languages.
To qualify for this unique free program, tenants must generally be: (1) currently housed, (2) experiencing actual or potential conflict with their housing provider, (3) be of mid to low income, and (4) reside in the Tenderloin, Lower Polk, or adjacent areas. However, no person will be arbitrarily turned away.
The Lower Polk TLC is funded by a generous grant from the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development.
